We’re into July, beginning the second half of 2024. It feels like a good time to pause and look back at the best of the year so far. That’s what I’m doing for this week’s Binge Watch, looking at my Top 10 TV Seasons so far this year. To make the list, the season has to be complete and available to view. I also included series that started at the end of 2023 but finished in 2024. In short, its seasons completed so far in 2024. Selections appear in ascending order! Before we kick off, here’s 10 more on my long list:
No. 20: Iwaju, Disney+
No. 19: The Power of Film, TCM
No. 18: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Season 12, HBO
No. 17: The Dynasty: The New England Patriots, Apple TV+
No. 16: Welcome to Wrexham, Season 3, FX
No. 15: Masters of the Air, Apple TV+
No. 14: For All Mankind, Season 4, Apple TV+
No. 13: Eric, Netflix
No. 12: Star Trek Discovery, Season 5, Paramount+
No. 11: Will Trent, Season 2, ABC
No. 10: 3 Body Problem, Netflix
About: This comes from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the team behind Game of Thrones. It was a high-profile project and a dense adaptation. It wasn’t universally beloved, and it had some rough patches for me, but ultimately, I liked what they did. The back half of the season was better for me than the beginning. I’m curious to see where it goes.
No. 9: The Gentlemen, Netflix
About: This series comes from Guy Ritchie, and it shares the name of one of his feature films. It’s not a continuation of that story or a sequel, but it shares a similar style template. I really enjoyed what we got here. Theo James and Kaya Scodelario were great together. I hope we get more!
No. 8: Abbott Elementary, Season 3, ABC
About: This remains the best show on network television and one of the funniest shows on TV, period. Quinta Brunson deserves a lot of credit, but this is a great ensemble show. The final two episodes really delivered and promise to push the series to a new place.
No. 7: Ripley, Netflix
About: Steve Zaillian had to wait a while for this to release as it shifted from Showtime to Netflix. The series proved worth the wait for audiences. Zaillian’s adaptation is beautifully crafted in Lucious black-and-white. Andrew Scott is amazing in the lead role.
No. 6: Fallout, Prime Video
About: Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy led this adaptation of the popular video game series. I never played the game, but I was taken with the world and the way it brings you into this story and these characters. This made for a fun binge and a surprisingly good time. More series like this Prime Video, please.
No. 5: Mr & Mrs Smith, Prime Video
About: Another winner from Prime Video, this series shares a name and idea with the film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but this is something that moves to its own beat. Donald Glover and Maya Erskine were amazing. I loved this series and the way it told its story and celebrated these characters.
No. 4: Fargo, Season 5, FX
About: This had much of its run in late 2023, but the final three episodes aired in January. I have long enjoyed this anthology series, and this season was a return to form. Jon Hamm and Juno Temple are great here. The final two episodes really worked for me. This is a great season from Noah Hawley.
No. 3: Mr. Bates vs. The Post Office, PBS
About: This four-part mini-series aired on PBS. It is based on a true story of Postmasters who were swindled and forced to battle the Post Office. It sounds like a dry subject, but it was really engaging and really got me interested. Toby Jones stars in the series and it’s worth checking out.
No. 2: Shogun, FX
About: A re-make of the mini-series from the 1980s, based on the novel from James Clavell. This was an incredible visual experience and featured some great performances. It was epic in scale and in its visual style. This was a great and engaging mini-series.
No. 1: The Bear, Season 3, FX
About: It’s been a good year so far for FX, which showcases its programming through Hulu and Disney+. Three of my Top 5 shows of the year so far come from FX. The Bear released its third season in total on June 26 and it took me about two and a half days to devour the 10 episodes. Some haven’t loved the third season as much, as it’s a bit of a departure from previous installments, but I loved the craft and performances. It delivers several exceptional stand out episodes and remains the best of TV.
