Last week, I caught a few movies set to hit streaming, theaters, and VOD. First up was a documentary that followed tennis legend Roger Federer in his final days heading into retirement and the other was the latest from A24 and Julia Louis-Dreyfus combo in Tuesday.

Federer: Twelve Final Days (Prime Video)

Federer: Twelve Final Days is an upcoming documentary film directed by Asif Kapadia and Joe Sabia. It follows Roger Federer in the last twelve days of his professional career, which ended at the 2022 Laver Cup.

Roger Federer is one of my all-time favorite tennis players. I would stay up late watching his battles with Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Novak Djokovic. Of course, time kicks up on all of us, but to get this personal look at Federer’s final days as a tennis player felt personal and gave us a side of him we had never seen before.

Federer didn’t always show that personality that some do in the world of tennis, so seeing this raw side of him in these final moments was mesmerizing. It was pretty remarkable, even in the early moments of his anticipating sending his retirement announcement, watching how nervous he was.

As we reached the final twenty minutes of this film and Federer’s final tennis match teaming up with Rafael Nadal, this is where the flood gates open. It was an emotional roller coaster watching and sent chills down my spine watching the greatest tennis player of all time say goodbye. The way this was shot, executed and delivered was top-tier and directors Asif Kapadia, Joe Sabia, directed their ass of throughout.

Overall, if you are a Roger Federer or tennis fan, Federer: Twelve Final Days is a must-watch. It is a beautiful, in-depth look at the final days of the greatest tennis player ever. Honestly, if you are a fan of watching sports documentaries, you should watch this. This is such an impactful look at one man saying goodbye to something he has loved for so long, and it makes you do lots of self-reflection.

Tuesday (In Theaters)

A mother (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, in a profoundly moving performance) and her teenage daughter (Lola Petticrew) must confront Death when it arrives in the form of an astonishing talking bird. From debut filmmaker Daina O. Pusić, Tuesday is a heart-rending fairy tale about the echoes of loss and finding resilience in the unexpected.

Anything with Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a must-see for me, and when she pairs with A24, it only ups the ante of how excited I am. Last year’s You Hurt My Feelings was one of my favorite gems of the year. Fast forward to Tuesday, which isn’t a movie starring streamer Sketch but an odd film where our main character talks to a bird.

This film explores some eye-opening themes about death, and in a more “normal” film, I think this could’ve been slightly more powerful. However, Tuesday’s oddity didn’t work in its favor, as we saw in previous A24 films. Julie Louis-Dreyfus is phenomenal, but not even her performance could get this film off its feet.

Overall, Tuesday was a swing and a miss for me. Although it hits within the film’s exploration of death, it doesn’t land anything between it all. There is a really good film within this script, but they didn’t execute it well within THIS film.
