The latest film from director Luca Guadagnino, Challengers, is due out in theaters tomorrow. In honor of its release, this week’s binge takes a look at previous projects from the director. Projects appear in chronological order!
A Bigger Splash (2015)
About: This is probably the one that first resonated with most American audiences. It features Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, and Dakota Johnson, among others. It has some beautiful shots and good performances, but it’s not the easiest story. That’s a theme here.
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
About: This one was an Academy Award favorite when it was released. It’s a bit difficult now given some of the off-screen things that have gone on with Armie Hammer. It features a great performance from Timothee Chalamet and some beautiful scenery. It’s also a bit of a difficult story but it’s well crafted.
Suspiria (2018)
About: A re-make of the classic horror film, this one features a couple frequent collaborators in Johnson and Swinton. The craft and the visuals are quite striking. The story is quite unsettling. Your enjoyment of this will likely have some to do with how this story strikes you.
We Are Who We Are (2020)
About: This limited series dropped on HBO. It’s a series set on U.S. Military base in Italy. It features some great visuals and strong performances, hallmarks of Guadagnino’s previous work. It didn’t seem to draw the buzz of some HBO series, but it remains a nice addition to his portfolio of work.
Bones and All (2022)
About: Chalamet takes the lead here opposite Taylor Russell and Mark Rylance. All three give memorable performances in a weird and wild story that is, like some of his other films, a bit unsettling. This might be stranger and more unsettling than most on this list, but it’s also my favorite of the films on this list. Some great performances and some great visuals, all the things you can come to expect from a Guadagnino film!
