This Friday we get the second installment of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon franchise. It’s meant to be his next, big, epic cinematic saga. In honor of that release, I decided to look back at his last saga, which was the D.C. Extended Universe, sometimes referred to as The Snyderverse. Below is my take in ascending order.

No. 16: Aquaman (2018)
About:
I just wasn’t a fan of this stand-alone film for Jason Momoa’s character. In fact, I didn’t enjoy his version of Aquaman in much of the DCEU.

No. 15: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
About:
This was the sequel. I liked it a touch more than the first installment, but it still wasn’t among my favorites. This was the closing salvo for the DCEU.

No. 14: Justice League (2017)
About:
I had so much anticipation for this film, and even thought Joss Whedon’s involvement would be good. Instead, the film we got was a hot mess.

No. 13: Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
About:
Released during the pandemic this film sort of fell flat. I like Gal Gadot in the role as Wonder Woman, but this second film just doesn’t quite click despite the talent.

No. 12: Birds of Prey (2020)
About
: Another one that I think is decent but didn’t quite click for me. I know many love this film, and I do enjoy Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, but I thought this was just OK.

No. 11: The Suicide Squad (2021)
About:
This was James Gunn’s first D.C. film. Does it belong to the Snyderverse? It’s hard to say. What’s maybe controversial is that I didn’t think it was an improvement over David Ayer’s contribution. It’s OK but not great.

No. 10: Suicide Squad (2016)
About:
I guess I like this more than most. What sells it for me is Robbie. I think this is the best of her three films as Harley Quinn. In fact, I liked her work here so much I thought she deserved an Academy Award nomination.

No. 9: Black Adam (2022)
About:
This is an interesting film. It doesn’t quite fit with much of the rest of the DCEU, but I enjoyed Dwayne Johnson in the lead role. I also liked the introduction of some other characters, like Hawkman and Dr. Fate. This is a better film than it probably got credit for being.

No. 8: Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
About
: One of a quartet of DCEU releases from last year. This one didn’t live up to my hopes. I loved the first Shazam! and I was excited to see it return. This sequel ends up being just OK.

No. 7: Blue Beetle (2023)
About
: Does this belong in the DCEU? That’s also hard to say. It might pull forward into Gunn’s new D.C., but I’m leaving it in for now. I enjoyed this one, a different kind of origin story, a lot more than I expected. I wouldn’t mind seeing another film from this world.

No. 6: The Flash (2023)
About:
I didn’t know what to think about this. I also get those that don’t feel good supporting Ezra Miller. But it was a delight to see Michael Keaton back as Batman. I also enjoyed this one a lot more than I expected. This is a fun film.

No. 5: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
About:
There are two versions of this. The expanded, director’s cut is a chef’s kiss. That’s the version I use when ranking in this franchise. I love the way it expands the story and brings it all together.

No. 4: Man of Steel (2013)
About:
This was Snyder’s first crack at D.C., and it still holds up. I like Henry Cavill in the lead role, and I like the way this is put together. The way it tackles the origin story is both unique and fascinating. This is an under-rated film.

No. 3: Shazam! (2019)
About:
This is a fun movie and also a Christmas movie. I like Zachary Levi in this role, and I had a blast with this film. From a tone standpoint, it’s a lot lighter on its feet than most of the Snyderverse. But it’s a fun and funny film that I’ve long enjoyed.

No. 2: Wonder Woman (2017)
About
: This origin story for Gadot’s Wonder Woman is a fun tale. It takes the action back to World War I. Gadot is great as is Chris Pine. This is one of my favorite superhero films, too.

No. 1: Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)
About
: Snyder gets his version of Justice League and it proved to be worth the wait. It’s four hours long but it’s a wonderfully made film. I’m glad that, if nothing else, we got to see his original vision for this story. I loved this film when it was released, and it remains among my favorite superhero films.
