We’re ending March with a bang as we get Godzilla X Kong in theaters tomorrow. As we prepare, this week I’m turning my binge toward a ranking of the other four films in the Monsterverse. Films appear in ascending order!

No. 4: Kong: Skull Island (2017)
About: Like I said last week, there are no bad films in this group. But one of them has to be at the bottom of the list, and for me it’s Skull Island. It’s a fine action film and arguably has the best cast—which includes Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and John Goodman, among others. But it’s the weakest of the existing films for me.
No. 3: Godzilla (2014)
About: I wasn’t sure I wanted a new Godzilla film, but Gareth Edwards delivers something interesting and emotional here. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Bryan Cranston are good in this film, which does a nice job of setting the table for what’s to come.
No. 2: Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
About: This was billed as the clash of the titans, and I think we got that. It was during a time where we needed the big spectacle of films, and this one delivered. I enjoyed the climactic action sequence and most of the flow of the film. I don’t know where we’re going from here, but this was a heck of a fun ride.
No. 1: Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
About: I get that many people didn’t enjoy this installment. So, it probably seems strange, but this tops my list. I loved the visuals, and I loved the arc of the story. But mostly, I loved the characters here. I enjoyed Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga. It is the film that resonated with me the most out of this cinematic world.
