This week we get Dune, Part 2. It’s a big, sweeping theatrical release starring Timothee Chalamet. He’s really taken off as a star the past few years, so for this week’s binge I’m looking at some of his recent memorable roles. Films appear in chronological order.
Little Women (2019)
About: This was his second collaboration with star Saoirse Ronan and director Greta Gerwig following Lady Bird in 2017. I like the way Gerwig tells the story in this adaptation, and I enjoyed Chalamet’s work as Laurie.
The French Dispatch (2021)
About: This film from Wes Anderson features a number of different shorter stories packed into this one film. All the stories are fun, but I enjoyed Chalamet in this wacky role.
Dune (2021)
About: Adapting Dune into a film is a big job, and a lot was put on Chalamet as the lead. The first film was a technical and visual masterpiece. I really enjoyed the look but wasn’t as taken with the elements of the characters and story. Hopefully that changes with part two.
Bones & All (2022)
About: Working with Luca Guadagino, this is a different kind of love story. Chalamet and Taylor Russell play young cannibals heading out on a road trip in the 1980s. It’s got a beautiful look and some great performances in a story that is sometimes hard to watch. But it’s a daring take.
Wonka (2023)
About: I wasn’t sold on the idea of a prequel story about Willy Wonka. And yet, what we got was incredible. That’s largely a credit to Chalamet who gives, perhaps, his best performance in the lead role. This was a surprisingly engaging film that ended up being one of my favorite films of the year.
