The Academy Award nominees were announced Tuesday. From now through the awards, I’ll be looking at nominees in some of the film categories. Today, it’s a look at the nominees for Best Documentary Feature. Nominees appear in order of preference for me. The Academy Awards takes place on Sunday, March 10.

20 Days in Mariupol
About:
This is an up close and personal look at the war in the Ukraine. The film comes from journalist Mstyslav Chernov, who is trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol for 20 days. The film captures the stories of the people, the conditions, and their brutal fight for survival. At times it’s harrowing, and the entire presentation is powerful.

Four Daughters
About:
I saw this film as it was a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards as well. This is a unique concept, using a combination of interviews, file footage, and actors to recreate scenes from the life of Olfa Hamrouni and her daughters. It’s an emotional and powerful story, especially as we get to the later acts.

Bobbi Wine: The People’s President
About:
Stories about the fight for democracy and fairness are always powerful and appealing. We get that here with the tale of Wine, who was an opposition leader in Uganda. His fight to lead and make his country a better place is difficult to watch at times but inspiring as well. I was drawn to the story and to Wine’s fight to craft a better world in his home country.

The Eternal Memory
About
: This is a love story between Augusto and Paulina, who have been together for decades. But when he’s diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, their world changes forever. This film follows them living with that diagnosis, telling their story and preparing for what’s coming. It’s at times moving and quite powerful.

To Kill a Tiger
About
: What would you do if your daughter was attacked? That’s a question posed in this film, where a father in India who demands justice for an assault on his 13-year-old daughter. This is a film that hasn’t yet made a big showing in the United States, so hopefully more people will get to see it as the awards approach.
