We got Wish released for Thanksgiving week. It’s the latest release from Walt Disney animation. While Disney has a number of sub brands, it can be hard to separate what comes from Disney animation itself, aside from Frozen. Below are five films I enjoy from Disney animation released in the last decade that aren’t named Frozen! Films appear in chronological order.
Wreck It Ralph (2012)
About: Technically this was more than a decade ago, but its sequel was released in 2018, so I’m counting it. John C. Reilly is fun as the lead voice, and I enjoyed Sarah Silverman as well. This is a fun and engaging film, which is in part what inspired a sequel.
Big Hero 6 (2014)
About: This is another one that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle. Disney has recently returned to the world with a series of Baymax shorts. This one was based on a comic book and has a lot of heart and a lot of fun. This is actually one of my favorite animated films and well worth checking out if you missed it.
Moana (2016)
About: I think many remember this as a Pixar film, but it was released under the banner of Disney animation. I don’t know how I feel about the upcoming live-action re-make, but I enjoyed the original animated film. Dwayne Johnson is good here and the music really makes this one soar.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
About: This film, like so many over a few years following COVID, got lost in the shuffle. It was released straight to Disney+ which likely limited its audience. But I loved the animation here and the story. It was one of my favorite animated films the year it was released and remains a film I think is under-rated.
Encanto (2021)
About: Fortunately, this got a theatrical release. It deserved to be seen on a big screen, which is how I saw it. The story, the humor and the music are engaging. I loved this movie and I think it’s another film that ends up a little under-rated. It’s probably also another Disney animated release some think is part of Pixar. It’s my favorite of the films on this list.
