This year I’m engaging in a year-long countdown, looking at my Top 50 Superhero Films. This runs through the end of 2022, meaning there are some selections in here from last year. Over the course of the year, I’ll be sharing the list in this space, counting down 10 at a time. Today’s installment is No. 20 to No. 11.
No. 20: Wonder Woman (2017)
About: The DCEU has been uneven, for sure. But this film was a revelation. Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot teamed to deliver a stirring period piece that was a great showcase for Wonder Woman. I love this film.
No. 19: The Avengers (2012)
About: I remember what a thrill this was at the time. It was a collaboration years in the making and an ambitious project that changed the course of superhero films. It still holds us as a lot of fun with some great action set pieces even if the MCU has grown beyond it.
No. 18: Captain American: The Winter soldier (2014)
About: This is as much a spy thriller as it is a superhero film. I haven’t always been a big fan of Captain America as a character, but I really enjoyed the way this film played out. The return of Bucky (Sebastian Stan) is great, as is the introduction of Anthony Mackie as The Falcon.
No. 17: The Batman (2022)
About: I know, I’m as surprised as anyone. I was beyond skeptical about this project and Robert Pattinson in the lead role as my favorite superhero of all time. This long, moody film assuaged those fears. I enjoyed Pattinson, but more I enjoyed the world that was created here and the style.
No. 16: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
About: How do you overcome the loss of Chadwick Boseman? That hung over this film, and yet the way that Ryan Coogler delivers a film that honors Boseman and drives the story forward. Angela Bassett should have won the Academy Award.
No. 15: Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
About: The first half of a culminating effort for the MCU, this film bore the weight of enormous expectations. I loved getting to see so many of these characters come together for the first time. The ending is something of a bummer, but it holds up as an incredible cinematic effort.
No. 14: Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)
About: For me, this is a four-hour masterpiece. I loved the way Snyder breathed his vision into the piece and the way a story we’d seen done before remastered into something that feels completely different and engaging. This is my favorite DCEU film.
No. 13: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
About: We’ve seen a lot of different Spider-Man films. In fact, there’s been a lot of Spider-Man films on this list and we’ll see a few more. But we had never seen a film like this, which is not only one of my favorite superhero films but an incredible animated adventure.
No. 12: Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
About: It was never going to be easy following Endgame. This was the first MCU film to do that and it does so with some flair. I love Tom Holland in this role and this is a really fun story. His back-and-forth with Jake Gyllenhaal is great and the cliffhanger here left you on the edge of your seat.
No. 11: Logan (2017)
About: If Batman is my favorite hero, Wolverine is a close second. And yet, his standalone films have been mostly unimpressive. That is until we got to Logan. What James Mangold does with this film is incredible. It’s a great performance from Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart. It’s a violent and darker tale but one with a tremendous amount of heart. That’s why it’s quite high on my list.
