This week Killers of the Flower Moon opens in theaters. It’s the sixth collaboration between director Martin Scorsese and star Leonardo DiCaprio on a feature film. In honor of the new release, this week’s Binge Watch looks back on their previous five collaborations. Films appear in chronological order.
Gangs of New York (2002)
About: This was their first collaboration, which featured Daniel Day Lewis in a memorable role as the primary antagonist. It was a big year-end release and a film that earned plenty of Academy Award attention.
The Aviator (2004)
About: This was another award contender. This time, DiCaprio was the main focus of the film as the eccentric Howard Hughes. It’s a tough story and a tough part but DiCaprio does a great job in the lead role. This is an under-rated collaboration.
The Departed (2006)
About: I go back-and-forth about it, but I think this is the best of their collaborations. This film featured a star-studded cast and was a hard-edge crime drama. DiCaprio played a cop under cover in the mob while Matt Damon played a gangster under cover as a member of the State Police. This film also features a great performance from Jack Nicholson. It won Best Picture and remains one of Scorsese’s better films.
Shutter Island (2010)
About: This was a moody film. It’s more of a horror film or a psychological drama than their previous collaborations. It’s also an under-rated film in both their filmographies. It’s dark and twisty but I love the way this story unfolds. It’s also a great performance from DiCaprio.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
About: Another collaboration based on a true story, and another Academy Award nominated film. DiCaprio is strong here as Jordan Belfort, while this film had plenty of interesting sequences and memorable performances. It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since this film was released!
