The Expend4bles is out this week. It’s another major franchise starring Sylvester Stallone. But what about films he’s in that aren’t part of franchises? That’s what this week’s Binge Watch is all about! Films appear in chronological order.
Cliffhanger (1993)
About: This one has a heck of an opening. Here, Stallone plays Gabe Walker, a rugged mountaineer with a tortured past that’s pulled into a heist gone wrong. It’s got plenty of action and plenty of tension. It’s one of his better non-franchise entries.
Demolition Man (1993)
About: It was a big year for Stallone, who came off the mountain to this futuristic film where he plays opposite Wesley Snipes and a young Sandra Bullock. This one is iconic in a lot of ways, but it has some over-the-top elements to it, too.
Judge Dredd (1995)
About: Speaking of over-the-top, this is another futuristic one. The outfit is iconic, as Stallone plays Judge Dredd, a cop with instant judiciary powers. When he’s framed for a crime, he has to fight the system that made him famous. This one isn’t my favorite, but it certainly has its fans.
Driven (2001)
About: Stallone plays something of a mentor here in a racing movie that features Burt Reynolds and Kip Pardue, among others. I actually thought this wasn’t half bad. The driving sequences work and the story is OK. It’s an under-appreciated film on Stallone’s resume.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
About: And here, he is kind of in a franchise, I guess. We’ll see if more comes of it, but he plays the voice of King Shark in James Gunn’s first D.C. tale. It was a film that had some passionate fans. I thought it was OK and certainly has its moments. Stallone’s character was a hit for most.
