Tomorrow, we get the big screen adaptation of Barbie, the doll come to life. It’s one of the most anticipated films of the summer. To celebrate, this week’s Binge looks at five other films involving Greta Gerwig, the woman behind Barbie.

Frances Ha (2012)
About:
A good chunk of Gerwig’s filmography involves collaborations with Noah Baumbach, who is now her husband. The pair co-wrote this screenplay, while Gerwig takes the starring role and Baumbach directs. It represents a signature style in dialog and performance. I didn’t love this film, but I appreciate the craft that went into it.

Mistress America (2015)
About:
Another collaboration where Gerwig and Baumbach co-wrote the script, she took a leading role, and he served as director. This one has a complicated narrative, but I liked it a bit better than their previous collaboration.

Lady Bird (2017)
About:
Here Gerwig writes and takes the director’s chair. This is a seminal story about a young woman (Saiorse Ronan) and her mother (Laurie Metcalf). It was a Best Picture nominee and it spoke to a generation of women. I appreciate the craft and storytelling here in a film that featured some memorable performances.

Little Women (2019)
About:
Two years later, Gerwig returned as a writer/director with another female-centric tale. The novel by Louisa May Alcott has been adapted many times, but this felt like a unique take. She again teamed with Ronan, adding Laura Dern, Florence Pugh and Emma Watson, among others, in this talented ensemble cast. This was one of my favorite movies of 2019.

White Noise (2022)
About:
While we were awaiting Barbie, Gerwig returned to the screen and returned to her partnership on screen with Baumbach. She is a co-lead, along with Adam Driver, in this film from Baumbach that debuted on Netflix at the end of 2022. It has some brilliant moments and a unique story, showcasing Gerwig’s talent as a performer.
