This week the latest Indiana Jones film will be released. It features Harrison Ford in the titular role, but it’s not the only film franchise the actor has carried. Below is my ranking of his franchise characters, including my favorite film from each franchise.
No. 1: Han Solo
Number of Films in the Role: Five
About: What would Star Wars be without Han Solo? It wouldn’t be as good; I can tell you that. This has to be Ford’s most iconic role, one that I enjoy and have long appreciated. He reprised the role in the modern trilogy as well, a welcome addition to the new wave of Star Wars films.
Best Film in the Role: Star Wars, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
No. 2: Indiana Jones
Number of Films in the Role: Five
About: The 1980s were a big time for Ford as a franchise player, with three franchises on this list originating in the decade. This part saw him paired again with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. I love these films and I’m excited to see Ford back in the role again in theaters this weekend.
Best Film in the Role: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
No. 3: Jack Ryan
Number of Films in the Role: Two
About: Ford wasn’t in the role long, appearing in only two films as Tom Clancy’s titular hero. He’s also far from the only one to play the part. We’ve seen Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine play the role on the big screen and John Krasinski play the part in the Prime Video series. But I’ve always enjoyed Ford in the role and enjoyed his two films, both of which took place in the 1990s.
Best Film in the Role: Patriot Games (1993)
No. 4: Rick Deckard
Number of Films in the Role: Two
About: This almost didn’t become a franchise. For a long time, it seemed like Blade Runner would be a stand-alone film, albeit one that Ridley Scott re-edited and re-released a number of times. Like so many of his iconic roles, Ford re-visited the part in the sequel in 2017.
Best Film in the Role: Blade Runner (1982)
