Coming-of-age feature based on an Asian-American teen’s life hopes to open dialogue between queer Gen Z youth and parents at the 49th Seattle International Film Festival

May 3, 2023 – (Los Angeles, CA) Seattle International Film Festival 2023 celebrates forty-nine years of indie films in May. EGGHEAD & TWINKIE is an official selection and one of six feature films in the festival’s New American Cinema Competition. The festival’s goal is to bring forward a group of select films by filmmakers un and underrepresented in today’s entertainment industry. The grand prize winner will be announced Sunday, May 21, 2023, at the Golden Space Needle Awards, and the winner will receive a cash prize of $5,000.00. The film festival will take place in person in Seattle May 11-21, 2023. The festival will also screen virtually on SIFF Channel May 22-28, 2023.

The 87-minute feature is told in a series of colorful flashbacks. After coming out to her parents, seventeen-year-old Twinkie takes off on a road trip to meet her online crush with the help of her nerdy best friend, Egghead. As they make their way across the country, Egghead wrestles with his unrequited feelings for Twinkie while Twinkie learns to embrace her identity as a gay mixed-Asian woman. Created by and for Gen Z, EGGHEAD & TWINKIE is a coming-of-age comedy about the joys and pains of coming out of the closet. Egghead & Twinkie Teaser

Director Sarah Kambe Holland’s biggest hope is for the film to resonate with queer youth and their parents. She would love for EGGHEAD & TWINKIE to open a dialogue for LGBTQ teens to speak more openly with their friends and family about their identity. In addition, she is happy this film provides a representation of queer and Asian teens. “As a mixed-Asian actor myself, I’m very aware of lacking roles for Asian American talent, so I was excited to write meaty characters for my cast to dive into. One of my favorite scenes in the film is when Jess and Twinkie discuss their Asian American identity, because Twinkie feels truly seen by Jess in that moment.”-Sarah Kambe Holland.

The film was written and directed by Sarah Kambe Holland. Nickelodeon’s Louis Tomeo as Egghead (series regular role as Robbie Miller on Every Witch Way) and Sabrina Jie-A-Fa as Twinkie (The Corrupt Half) are the key cast. LGBTQ Influencer Ayden Lee as BD and Asahi Hirano as Jess. Ben Thornewill (Jukebox The Ghost) composed the score.

The film received the Audience Award at the 2023 Florida Film Festival.
