Matt Braunger “Doug” Review

The brand new stand-up special from Matt Braunger, “Doug” has arrived over on Moment, and I will share my thoughts and whether or not you should check it out.

Heading into watching this, I wasn’t sure what to expect because this was my introduction to Matt’s comedy. I take pride in my love of stand-up comedy but understand I have some holes that I am trying to fix by watching any special that I can come across. So, I was excited to dive into the world of Matt Braugner.

When Matt hits the stage, it’s a rather simplistic and somewhat relaxing set. He has a light-up sign behind him with the words of the special Doug and two palm trees on either side of him that are these neon colors. The small intimate atmosphere is typically one I prefer when watching a special. So I give him a solid A+ on the setup of the special (especially with the iCarly bit).

I stress the importance of landing the first joke to reel in your audience and set them up for what is ahead, and my goodness does Matt hit a home run here. He starts with a bit about hot men and how he is comfortable enough to mention or highlight them. The entire thing is downright hilarious and even relatable. I find it funny when “men” aren’t comfortable enough in their own skin to say whether or not a man is attractive. Matt delivers a STRONG opening.

You know, this entire special was freaking hilarious. Braunger can deliver the jokes with an extra layer of funny. He doesn’t have an over-centric persona on the stage, but he has body language and facial expressions that enhance his jokes. He knows what he is good at and delivers just that, nothing more, nothing less.

Another thing that stood out was the jokes that he formed while being out of action during the pandemic. While some comedians became politicians, Matt had a baby and sunk into that and his relationships, which brought some new material that was full of non-stop laughs. He has relatable jokes, and that makes them even funnier.

Overall, Matt Braunger’s Doug is one of the best stand-up comedy specials of 2022. You will laugh from start to finish and be like me and seek out more of his work when it is over. Seek this one out ASAP.
