A week ago I brought you an article filled with let’s say, a disagreeable opinion of the Academy’s decision to only allow winners to make a speech if they are physically at the event in LA. I disagreed as even though I understood the decision, I thought it was extremely unfair on people who physically couldn’t make the event, either due to travel laws or health concerns. Since then, nominees such as Emerald Fennell have voiced their disappointment with the Academy’s decision. Well, seems like the Academy have listened and a compromise has been made.
Nominees in the UK and France now have the ability to attend the Academy Awards via hubs. The exact location hasn’t been made public thus far but we do know they’ll suitably be in London and Paris. The Academy stated they didn’t announce this originally as it hadn’t been finned out yet, make of that as you will.
This is all well and good and I’m glad a much bigger chunk of nominees can accept their potential award, but this is only two more locations in a worldwide pandemic. For the few left, I hope they take the next step in allowing nominees who still can’t be at the ceremony to join via Zoom. All the other awards ceremonies have put up with it, so the Oscars can with a few nominees. I guess we’ll have to wait and see…
