‘Raya And The Last Dragon’ – Review

I would like to thank Disney for allowing me to watch and review this film.

Directed by: Don Hall & Carlos López Estrada

Writers: Qui Nguyen & Adele Lim

Starring: Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina & Gemma Chan

Synopsis: In a realm known as Kumandra, a re-imagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilization, a warrior named Raya is determined to find the last dragon.

Disney has hit another home run with its latest animated film Raya And The Last Dragon. Its breathtaking visuals combined with its staggering action, characters, and storytelling has made this one of the most enjoyable films I have watched this year.

The score alone brought music to my ears. It felt authentic and brought a fabled tone to the atmosphere of the film. The characters all served a purpose and contributed to the message of the story.

Trust was the theme of this film and Carlos López Estrada did a wonderful job with transporting it to the silver screen. The writing was on point and blended well with Kelly Marie Tran & Awkwafinas’s chemistry in the studio. Gemma Chan playing as the villain was a great choice as well.

I can’t remember the last time I was drawn into the action scenes of a Disney animated film. There was an even amounted sprinkled throughout the story. It didn’t feel overbearing and it arrived when it needed. The story did feel a little by the numbers but the twist and turns kept me engaged and wanting to learn more about the world of Kumandra.

Final Thoughts: This film is full of heart, and fascination. The action is nothing short of marvelous and the message of trust is an influential one. This has easily crept its way into one of my favorite animated films of the year. Raya And The Last Dragon is set to debut in theaters and on Disney Plus via Premier access on March 5th.

My Score: A
