The Valero Verdict: “Buffaloed” & “The Lovebirds”

Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this, I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with a rating of the movie and short overall thoughts.

On the docket today, a double feature review, Buffaloed and The Lovebirds.

Set in the underworld of debt-collecting and follows the homegrown hustler Peg Dahl, who will do anything to escape Buffalo, NY.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

“Debt Never Dies”

Zoey Deutch is an absolute killer in this role. She is strong, confirmed, and carries the film on her back with ease.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when watching this honestly. I ended up enjoying myself. The movie is compiled with scum bag pieces of garbage, and you don’t mind because they keep you intrigued in what is going to happen.

The film played out like a loan version of The Big Short. The pieces are put together in a smart, fun way that keeps you happy throughout the film. I highly recommend checking it out.

A couple (Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani) experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

“Fuck E Cheese”

The chemistry between Rae and Kumail are fantastic together. They have this spark the moment they are on screen together. They carry a very mediocre screenplay.

The film felt like a combination of like twenty other movies in one with a lack of originality. The script was sloppy. They did not give their leads enough to make the roles their own. It felt like they were forcing these one-liners down our throat, which some land and some don’t.

The movie does provide enough laughs for you to stick around. But the film never felt that anything that was happening mattered. The chase was lackluster, the antagonist was boring, and the payoff was rather dull. I was disappointed because I felt like this had some potential.

The film is not a bad little date night movie but not much more than that.
