Where were you on January 6, 2021? Most of us probably remember where we were and what we were doing when a mob overtook the capital. It was a strange and chaotic day that capped off a strange and chaotic election season.

Now five years on, many of those involved still bare scars of that day. For those who were charged with defense of the capital, it’s something they won’t forget. For those who took part, were arrested, charged, convicted, and later pardoned, it’s dominated the past five years of their lives. But how did we get to that point.

The new documentary Homegrown, from filmmaker Michael Premo, is now streaming on Gathr in honor of the anniversary. It’s a documentary very much focused on that day, the events leading up to it, and the aftermath for those who participated.

The film follows three different conservative activists in different battleground communities in New York, New Jersey, and Texas. Premo follows them and allows them to share their views and reason for getting into the election fight. It follows them on the campaign trail, especially those heated months leading up to the 2020 Presidential Election. Then it follows in the aftermath, through the January 6 incident and beyond.

It’s a picture of people, passion, and a deeply divided nation. It covers a seven-year period and will leave you with plenty of questions. It’s also a fascinating deep dive into the events leading up to that day and the way the events of the day have left these three individuals changed.

Premo does a nice job of telling the story through the eyes of these participants. It takes you back to that period and forces you to consider where we are now five years later. For those that want more of a deep dive, or at least are determined not to forget what happened in 2021, this is worth checking out.
