As 2025 draws to a close, it’s time to take stock of what we’ve seen on the big and small screen. Over the next few days, I’ll be giving some of my picks in a wide variety of categories. Up today, it’s the best comedy films I saw in 2025.

Before I dive into the top five, I thought I’d give a couple honorable mentions. These were films I liked that just didn’t quite make the cut.

  • Freakier Friday: This sequel was a lot of fun. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan were great together again.
  • The Monkey: This Osgood Perkins film is based on a Stephen King story. It has solid horror elements, but it also made me laugh.
  • The Naked Gun: This re-boot of the classic franchise picked up the style well. I liked Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson here.

No. 5: The Roses
About:
This is a re-make of War of the Roses, featuring Olivia Coleman and Benedict Cumberbatch as a warring long-married couple. It had some good moments and a couple of good performances. I enjoyed this one!

No. 4: Ella McCay
About:
This was the first feature from James L. Brooks since 2010. People were mixed on it, but I enjoyed the story and the sequences. Curtis and Albert Brooks were the MVPs for comedy, and Emma Mackey gives a strong lead performance.

No. 3: Eternity
About
: This was a unique setup, following a woman who has to choose which of her two loves to spend eternity with. There are some deeply emotional moments, but this one also has a lot of laughs. It’s a great set up with some good execution.

No. 2: Is This Thing On?
About
: This film from Bradley Cooper follows a newly separated man who plunges into stand-up comedy. Will Arnett is great in the lead role and has some really funny moments. This is a film with hidden depths.

No. 1: The Phoenician Scheme
About:
Do we now take Wes Anderson for granted? Perhaps we do. This was a wildly creative, fun, and amusing film. It has a great cast and a fun story. I loved this one.
