Sometimes you start something that seems like a great idea, but it doesn’t pan out. That could be a project, or an outing, or even a friendship. And when it goes off the rails, it can go off the rails in a hurry.
That’s the case with Don’t Trip, a new film that’s streaming on Tubi. It comes from writer/director Alex Kugelman, and it feels like something he might have some personal familiarity with, especially as we go toward the conclusion.
In the film, we meet Dev (Matthew Sato). He’s an aspiring screenwriter, but he’s currently working as an assistant. He has a new script that he thinks will be great. But when he sends it to another agency, his boss lets him go. Now, he’s unemployed and still trying to get someone to take a chance on his script.
He latches on to the idea that producer Scott Lefkowitz (Fred Melamed) is the guy to get it done. But he doesn’t have an in with the producer or a way to get his script seen. Then he latches on to a plan.
Turns out Lefkowitz has a son, Trip (Will Sennett). So, Dev decides to befriend trip, despite the objections of his girlfriend Monica (Olivia Rouyre). At first, while Trip is a bit wild, it seems to be going well. But as he sinks further into Trip’s world, Dev begins to realize he might have made a big mistake.
This is a quick film that runs about 90 minutes. It’s a simple and straight-forward story that takes you in some interesting directions. That’s especially true of the third act, where things go a bit off the rails and the tone changes.
For much of the film, you’re not sure what to make of Trip. Is he an eccentric, wealthy young man who is lonely. Or could he be harboring a secret plan? Or maybe he’s just crazy. You’re not sure which to believe until the ending.
The performances here are fine. Sennett seems to be having fun as Trip, and I enjoyed Rouyre in her role and the way she comes back into play more at the end. This had a wild ending that will leave you entertained.
You can catch Don’t Trip now streaming on Tubi.
