What is your town known for? Why do people come to your town? What is the identity of your region? That’s a question that was on the mind of Tim Elliott.
He lives in the small town of Chickasha, Oklahoma. The town has a beautiful festival of light during Christmas that is an incredible draw. But it lasts just a short time. People come, then they leave, and the town is quiet again. Elliott wondered what it would be like if they came all year round.
He traveled the country and saw the notable attractions in other areas. The simple and quirky monuments that kept people visiting their towns or making special trips to see them. And he wanted the same for his town.
Then an idea came to him. One of the most iconic moments in one of the most iconic Christmas films—a major award! What if his town was known for a statue that appealed to people’s love of Christmas.
In the new film Fragilé, filmmaker Reagan Elkins follows Elliott’s journey and the aftermath. He is a man with a dream and dogged determination. He comes up against plenty of opposition. And it’s a proposal that nearly threatens to tear the town apart.
And yet, he remains committed to the idea of getting a leg lamp statue up in the town. The film chronicles the backlash, the process, and the seemingly endless City Council meetings where the idea is debated.
It’s a fascinating and quirky idea that turns into a fascinating exploration of small-town politics. Elkins does a nice job of bringing it all together in an interesting and engaging way. I liked the back-and-forth in the film and the way this story is brought to life.
If you’re a fan of a good small-town story, this will intrigue you. It’s a documentary that captures something about the spirit of small towns in a delightful way. It’s worth seeking out.
Fragilé is available on VOD starting Friday, November 7.
