A wild Week 5 of the NFL Season draws to a close tonight as the Chiefs travel to Jacksonville to battle the Jaguars. It’s a crucial game for both teams, with some weapons for both. I have a full preview of the game below, but first let’s look at some takeaways from the rest of Week 5.
The AFC North fumbles
The Pittsburgh Steelers had a bye in Week 5. Even by not playing, they increased their lead in the division. The Browns, now on to a rookie quarterback, lost in London. The Bengals dropped to 2-3, and 0-3 with Joe Burrow out. And the Ravens got blown out at home, slumping to 1-4. The Steelers quietly have been the best, most stable team in the division. It’s a rough start for the AFC North.
Woe is the Jets
There is only one winless team left in the NFL. No, it’s not the Titans. That was a surprise. No, it’s not the Saints. Also, a surprise. Instead, it’s the New York Jets. They’ve looked frisky at times, but the team is 0-5. The defense has been horrid and the offense is erratic. It’s hard to see where the Jets’ wins will come from, if they come.
Mac Jones is making waves
Jones is now 3-0 as a starter for the 49ers. He’s been great when called upon to step in for Brock Purdy, even putting up better stats. All that has started some rumbles about who is the best option to lead the 49ers. That’s a credit to Jones, who has looked great in San Francisco.
Now, on to the Monday night preview.
Kansas City Chiefs (2-2) at Jacksonville Jaguars (3-1)
The Chiefs started off rough, going 0-2. They’ve bounced back with a couple convincing wins in their last two games as they get healthier and get more players back. The Jaguars, meanwhile, have just been winning. It hasn’t been pretty, but they’ve gotten off to a hot 3-1 start. Can they win again in Week 5?
For the Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes is looking better. He’s a low-end QB1 for me. In the backfield, I guess Isaih Pacheco is the best option. But I’m not confident. Honestly, I’d rather not play any of them. In the passing game, Travis Kelce is still a low-end TE1. In the passing game, Xavier Worthy is back and looks good. I like him as a WR2. I also like Hollywood Brown as a flex option.
For the Jaguars, Trevor Lawrence has been OK but unspectacular. He’s a QB2. In the backfield, Travis Etienne is having a great season. I like him as an RB2 with upside. The passing game is more of a question. Brenton Strange has upside, but is still more of a TE2. In the passing game, I want to be able to start Brian Thomas, Jr., with confidence. I’m not quite there, but he’s still a WR3 for me.
I’m taking the Chiefs to win.
