After months of watching to see how Mark (Adam Scott) and Helly (Britt Lower) would fare, and whether anyone could save Gemma (Dichen Lachman), we finally have arrived at the Severance season two finale.
The episode—“Cold Harbor”—is 75 minutes long, packing plenty of drama in before the season draws to a close. The episode drops today and brings an end to the second season. It paves the way for the third season, which will come at some point in the future, answering some questions and leaving others wide open.
So, how was the second season? Let’s dive in.
The season kicked off January 17 resuming the story nearly three years after the first season ended in 2022. That was a long time to wait as the show built on its fanbase thanks to those who caught up with the show in the space between seasons.
The second season premier was strong, but the season arguably hit its stride—and its highest note—with an incredible and imaginative fourth episode, “Woe’s Hollow.” The episode took our core group of Mark, Helly, Dylan (Zach Cherry) and Irving (John Turturro) out into a frozen forest. Big plot was revealed, but the craft of the episode was also incredible. It was my favorite episode of the season, and one of my favorite episodes of the year so far.
We got another high point a few weeks later, with the seventh episode titled “Chikhai Bardo.” The episode took us back in time, exploring Mark’s relationship with Gemma and how they got to where we are in the show. It provided some beautiful emotional moments that rewarded longtime viewers of the series.
For me, “Woe’s Hollow,” “Cold Harbor,” and “Chikhai Bardo” are the three best episodes of the season, and on my list of the best episodes of the year, so far. I was blown away by the craft and the daring of the storytelling.
I was a big fan of the first season of Severance when it dropped in 2022. I waited for its return, wondering how it would come back and how it could pick the story back up. It was worth the wait. The second season was incredible, delivering some beautiful emotional beats and leaving in a place where I can’t wait for its return.
Severance season two is the best of the small screen so far in 2025, and well worth checking out. To hear more of my thoughts on the finale and the season, join Eric and I on This Week at the Movies this Saturday at 10 est.
