In three days, the Academy announces the nominees for the 97th Academy Awards. We have a few shocks and surprises each year, and I am here to share my final predictions in the four acting categories. While there are many picks I felt really comfortable with, my gut found a few places where I could see someone sneak into the five.
This award season has seen quite a bit of shock and awe. Once a frontrunner, Mikey Madison has been surpassed by Demi Moore as the clear frontrunner. In lead acting, Timothee Chalamet tries to take down Adrien Brody while Zoe Saldana and Kieran Culkin run away with the supporting categories. But enough about winners, let’s dive into the nominees.
Best Supporting Actor

Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain
Clarence Macklin, Sing Sing
Edward Norton, A Complete Unknown
Guy Pearce, The Brutalist
Denzel Washington, Gladiator II
I fully understand that Denzel Washington has missed several key nominations, but I will never bet against Denzel and the Academy’s love for him. I also have a shocking miss with Yura Borisov just missing the final five. Would I be shocked if Yura is in and Denzel is out? No, but I am trying to be slightly different and think Anora could be slipping down the charts.
Best Supporting Actress

Zoe Saldana, Emilia Perez
Ariana Grande, Wicked
Isabella Rossellini, Conclave
Monica Barbaro, A Complete Unknown
Selena Gomez, Emilia Perez
While I’ve seen Jamie Lee Curtis’s name pop up several times, and even some people are predicted, I don’t see it happening with the movie not getting much love elsewhere. Margaret Qualley and Felicity Jones are two names that are in the conversation, but I went with a slight shock here, and Selena Gomez nabbed that last slot. Again, the love for Emilia Perez is real, and it will be showcased with over a dozen nominations on Oscar morning.
Best Actor

Adrien Brody, The Brutalist
Timothee Chalamet, A Complete Unknown
Ralph Fiennes, Conclave
Colman Domingo, Sing Sing
Jesse Eisenberg, A Real Pain
Daniel Craig, Sebastian Stan, and Hugh Grant have all been in the mix throughout this award season. However, I am sticking with my guy that A Real Pain is a huge player, adding Best Actor to its nominations list. That said, Sebastian Stan’s performance in The Apprentice is something to watch out for.
Best Actress

Mikey Madison, Anora
Demi Moore, The Substance
Cynthia Erivo, Wicked
Karla Sofia Gascon, Emilia Perez
Nicole Kidman, Babygirl
Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Fernanda Torres are both on the cusp of this race, and I wouldn’t be shocked to hear their name. The Academy LOVES Nicole Kidman, and her daring performance in Babygirl will lead to her grabbing her sixth Oscar nomination.
