We’ve got a female buddy comedy that hit theaters this weekend. Keke Palmer and Sza play best friends in the comedy One of Them Days. Should you check it out? I answer that for you below
One of Them Days
When best friends and roommates Dreux and Alyssa discover Alyssa’s boyfriend has blown their rent money, the duo finds themselves going to extremes in a race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact.
As I walked into the screener, I knew next to nothing about this film, but as a massive fan of Keke Palmer, I knew we’d be in for a treat. On top of that, we rarely get the treat of a buddy comedy with two Black women at the center of the film, AND it’s being released in theaters nationwide.
Once we find out the stakes of Dreux and Alyssa being forced to do whatever it takes to get the money for the rent, the film takes off to a level of hilarity and never really lets off the gas. Although it follows many of the predictable beats we see in films of this nature, I still found myself enamored by the ride.
Keke Palmer is an incredible actress who carried this movie on her back. At times, she almost felt out of place because she was head and shoulders above everyone around her. That said, what keeps you invested is the amount of fun you could see she had playing the role of Dreux. She hits you with some witty one-liners while also delivering in the dramatic moments when Dreux and Alyssa come face to face.
SZA was a bit of a drag at first, but as the film progressed, she nestled into the role. As for the remainder of the cast, you have some fun little cameos from Katt Williams and Lil Rel that make you laugh. However, when they revealed the villain at the end, I thought they ruined a good chance at a unique or fun cameo. I also think they could’ve explored a little more with Maude Apatow’s character. If we get a sequel (I hope we do), I definitely think it’s in the cards.
Overall, One of Them Days is a rare buddy comedy we don’t get anymore. It’s got a fantastic lead performance from Keke Palmer and an ensemble that plays their part in making this fun. I highly recommend checking this out on the big screen, preferably with an audience. Please support the film so we can get a sequel!
