We’re cruising to the end of 2024 and as we do, I’m looking back at some of my favorite films and performances from the year. As well as a few of my least favorite. Each day between now and January 9 look for another installment in a different category. Let’s ring out 2024 by looking back on some of the best and worst of the year!
Today, it’s my favorite ensembles of the year.
No. 5: Saturday Night
About: There isn’t really a standout performance here, but this is a case where the sum of the whole is greater than any individual part. There are so many great beats from performers here, many of whom are giving a take on iconic legends in comedy.
No. 4: A Complete Unknown
About: Timothee Chalamet takes the headlines, but this is a great group effort. Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro are great here, too, as is Edward Norton. One of the standouts for me is Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie. It’s a great ensemble.
No. 3: Nosferatu
About: Bill Skarsgard and Lily-Rose Depp are standouts, but this is exceptionally cast. Nicholas Hoult is great, as are Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson. There are so many great performances in this exceptional cast.
No. 2: Conclave
About: I loved Fiennes in the lead role, but this is about an incredible group. All the actors here play their parts beautifully, helping to build this world and flesh out this story.
No. 1: Dune: Part Two
About: We aren’t appreciative enough of this cast. I loved Chalamet’s performance, and I noted Ferguson was my favorite supporting actress of the year. But there are so many great performances here. I love Zendaya, and Austin Butler is totally menacing. It’s a small role, but Lea Seydoux was captivating for me. This whole cast ups their game and it’s amazing.
