We’re cruising to the end of 2024 and as we do, I’m looking back at some of my favorite films and performances from the year. As well as a few of my least favorite. Each day between now and January 9 look for another installment in a different category. Let’s ring out 2024 by looking back on some of the best and worst of the year!

No. 5: Santosh
About:
This is about a widow in India who is pressed into law enforcement service. She’s tasked with a big case, but it turns out the case and her mentor aren’t what she expected. I liked the story, and I liked the way this was put together. Some great shots here.

No. 4: The Seed of the Sacred Fig
About:
This is one of the most celebrated International Features of the year. This one is set in Iran and tells a difficult story of family. The last act gets away from the heart for me a little, but I was fascinated by this story of changing dynamics and changing culture in a repressive regime. It’s also beautifully shot.

No. 3: No Other Land
About:
This made my list of documentaries, too. It’s a beautifully told story that tells the side of the conflict we don’t often here. It was deeply emotional at times and is worth seeking out.

No. 2: All We Imagine As Light
About:
Another tale of India, this time of a pair of nurses who are navigating work, life, and relationships in a crowded city. The cinematography here stood out, as did the quietly beautiful narrative. I really enjoyed this.

No. 1: Kneecap
About
: This was a fun mid-year surprise. Part of it is in English, but it’s about some Irish rappers, whose work and native tongue is a big focus of the film. It’s about getting their native language recognized, and it’s based on the true story of these real musical artists. Michael Fassbender has a fun supporting role here, too. I really enjoyed this journey.
