We get the final Monday night game of the season this week and it’s a good one. Or we hope it’s a good one. We haven’t had great luck in this long banquet of football since Christmas Day. But below is a preview of the game. First, let’s consider what else we learned in Week 17.
The AFC goes through Kansas City
A couple weeks ago the Chiefs were facing two games in less than a week with an injured quarterback and pressure to keep winning. Patrick Mahomes didn’t miss either game, and the Chiefs didn’t miss, either. They won both games—against the Texans and Steelers—to move to 15 wins on the season. The locked up the No. 1 overall seed and a three-week layoff for Mahomes.
The Bengals are alive
That didn’t seem possible when the team slumped to 4-8. But with a big win over the Broncos on Saturday, the Bengals moved back to 8-8. They could move to 9-8 with a win over the Steelers in Week 18. They need help, but that could be enough to vault them back into the playoffs.
The Broncos still need a win
Or a tie if we’re being technical. When the Broncos beat the Colts in Week 15, it seemed they were on the cusp. The team was 9-5, needing just one win to lock up a playoff spot. After losses to the Chargers and Bengals in consecutive weeks, the Broncos are now 9-7 and need a win or a tie to lock up a playoff spot. Can they get it against the Chiefs? We’ll find out.
Now, on to Monday night’s game.
Detroit Lions (13-2) at San Francisco 49ers (6-9)
This is a re-match of the NFC Championship Game, but these teams have taken radically different paths. The Lions have one of the best records in the league, but they have a host of teams hot on their heels. They need wins to lock up the top seed. The 49ers, meanwhile, are out of the running after a torrent of injuries that left them constantly short-handed.
For the Lions, Jared Goff is a start at QB and Jahmyr Gibbs is a start at running back. In the passing game, Amon-Ra St. Brown is a WR1 for me, while Jameson Williams is a WR3, and Tim Patrick is a deep league flex. Sam LaPorta has gotten going the past few weeks and is a low-end TE1 for me.
For the 49ers, Brock Purdy is a borderline QB1. In the backfield, Isaac Guerendo appears to be back, making him an RB2 for me. In the passing game, you’re starting George Kittle. He’s a TE1 for me. I like Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings as WR3s this week.
I’m taking the Lions.
