We’re cruising to the end of 2024 and as we do, I’m looking back at some of my favorite films and performances from the year. As well as a few of my least favorite. Each day between now and January 9 look for another installment in a different category. Let’s ring out 2024 by looking back on some of the best and worst of the year!
No. 5: Music By John Williams
About: Williams has had an exceptional career providing the iconic soundtrack to many films. This documentary looks at his life, his career, and his process. On Disney+, it was one of my favorite streaming films of the year, too.
No. 4: Skywalkers: A Love Story
About: This one was part of the Sundance Film Festival, but I caught it later when it came to Netflix. I am not much for daring or heights, so I wasn’t sure this would be for me. But I ended up being taken with the story of this couple that climbed to daring heights. It’s worth checking out.
No. 3: No Other Land
About: This is a documentary that’s also an International Feature. It tells the story of a Palestinian village that is being systematically erased as part of Israel’s efforts to expand its nation and its borders. Stories always have two sides. This is the side of the story we don’t often see and hear, and it is powerful.
No. 2: Casa Bonita, Mi Amor!
About: This is probably a documentary that means more to us in Colorado. It’s about the efforts of Matt Parker and Trey Stone to rebuild a classic Denver restaurant that is a local landmark. It’s a beautifully told story that really hit for me.
No. 1: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story
About: Reeve was great as Superman, but it’s his real story that is incredibly inspiring. That’s what we get here. This film chronicles his life and the efforts at research after the accident that changed his life. It was beautiful and deeply emotional, my favorite documentary of the year.
