We’re cruising to the end of 2024 and as we do, I’m looking back at some of my favorite films and performances from the year. As well as a few of my least favorite. Each day between now and January 9 look for another installment in a different category. Let’s ring out 2024 by looking back on some of the best and worst of the year!
No. 5: Abigail
About: This was one of the pleasant surprises of the first part of 2024. I also really enjoyed the horror films we got in what was a rich year for the genre. This is a vampire tale of a different sort that featured a crisp script, some strong writing, and a few fun twists and turns. This was fun.
No. 4: The Substance
About: There were some incredible performances here. I think Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley could be on the short list for award season. I really enjoyed the first two thirds of this film, too. It has a fascinating concept. I wasn’t as taken with a wild third act, but this remains one of the most creative horror films of the year.
No. 3: A Quiet Place: Day One
About: This was a prequel to the original films, introducing new characters and a new location. What works beautifully here are the characters created by Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn. I love the location here and the way this builds on the franchise while telling a really engaging new story.
No. 2: Longlegs
About: Some might quibble this isn’t true horror. What I love about horror is that it is a broad canvass. This is more of a thriller than a slasher, but it’s part of that broad umbrella. I am also a huge fan of The Silence of the Lambs, and this film gives me those vibes. Nicholas Cage is fun here and Maika Monroe makes for a good lead. I was digging what Osgood Perkins put down with this film.
No. 1: Nosferatu
About: This film draws inspiration from the Bram Stoker novel and the 1922 silent film. Robert Eggers delivers a masterful film here. The craft is incredible, featuring some of the best shots of the year. Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgaard are up to the challenge, too. This was one of my favorite films of the year.
