We’re cruising to the end of 2024 and as we do, I’m looking back at some of my favorite films and performances from the year. As well as a few of my least favorite. Each day between now and January 9 look for another installment in a different category. Let’s ring out 2024 by looking back on some of the best and worst of the year!
No. 5: Snack Shack
About: This little coming-of-age film is set in Nebraska City in 1991. During a long summer a couple of friends try to make their fortune running a snack shack at the local pool and find their relationship tested by a new lifeguard. It’s a fun film that has some poignant moments. I like Conor Sherry and Gabriel LaBelle, and the overall arc of the film.
No. 4: Your Monster
About: Is it a comedy? Is it a musical? Is it a horror film? This could possibly fit in any of the categories, but I’m going with a comedy here. I enjoyed this one, based on a true story, that features Melissa Barrera in a fun role and a unique story. This has a wild final act, but there’s plenty to enjoy about the journey along the way.
No. 3: Babes
About: This came during the early part of summer and didn’t get a lot of fanfare in theaters. In fact, I saw it later when it dropped to streaming. But I had a lot of fun with it. This features Michelle Buteau and Ilana Glazer as best friends going through a difficult time as one has a new child and the other discovers she’s pregnant. It has some hilarious moments and some great performances.
No. 2: Deadpool & Wolverine
About: This is the third film in the Deadpool franchise, and it was my favorite. I love Ryan Reynolds in this role, and his back-and-forth with Hugh Jackman is great. This one made me laugh hard and was one of my favorite films of the summer.
No. 1: Saturday Night
About: Saturday Night Live is an institution, but it was something of a gamble when it began. This film takes place in the run up to that premier episode, making it an interesting gamble in and of itself. And yet, it works. I love Jason Reitman as a filmmaker, and this is one of my favorite of his films. It has plenty of laughs but also plenty of heart. It was one of my favorite films of the year.
