Christmas is a time of family and celebration. It can also be a time for miracles. For Ollie, the protagonist of the new film Awesomest Christmas Ever, a miracle is just what he needs to keep his parents together and his life on track.
We pick up about a week from Christmas as Ollie (Gus Howell) is playing cards with his best friend Trevor (Izzy Richter). They’re talking about what they hope to get for Christmas, and since Trevor has already figured out what his present will be, Ollie decides to go on a mission.
Ollie gets nowhere with his parents—Noreen (Sonya Davis) and Oskar (Steve Mallers)—so he decides to do some stealth snooping. After a delivery at the house, Ollie overhears an argument from his parents and learns they are planning to split up and he’ll be moving. That news is supposed to be relayed to him on Christmas.
Deflated, he reunites with Trevor and shares the news. But soon Trevor encourages Ollie to make the most of his week and try to change his parents’ mind since they don’t know he’s in on the truth. He hatches a Parent Trap style plot and puts it into motion. But with things going off the rails quickly, Ollie turns to the one person who can best help—Katie (Ellison Pipe). But can he thaw the frost between them in time to find a way to get his parents back together?
This is a fun, seasonal offering that plays into a lot of warm, familiar tropes. It’s a good piece of family-friendly entertainment, with a fun story and some solid kid performances. I liked Howell and Pipes, and their back-and-forth throughout the film. It’s a story and a couple characters that feel familiar and will bring you into the story.
We’ve seen plenty of films follow the Parent Trap-style narrative, and it’s usually fun. This is no exception, creating some awkward sequences, mining a few laughs, and coming to a solid, emotional resolution. Writer/director Matthew Wilson does a nice job putting it all together while also delivering a memorable cameo performance.
I like the Christmas setting here and the arc of the plot. It has a fun resolution and an upbeat holiday message. For those looking for some fun this holiday season, check this out on streaming.
Awesomest Christmas Ever drops on Prime Video on Friday, November 22.
