The controversial Ali Abbasi movie The Apprentice has hit theaters. Is the film worth checking out on the big screen? I break down my thoughts on the film, the performances, and whether or not it is an award contender.
The Apprentice follows a young Donald Trump, eager to make his name as the hungry second son of a wealthy family in 1970s New York, comes under the spell of cutthroat lawyer Roy Cohn. Cohn sees in Trump the perfect protege: someone with raw ambition, a hunger for success, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win.
This movie almost didn’t come out because Donald Trump didn’t want the film to be released to paint him in any light other than what he wants the world to see. However, Abbasi’s consistent attempt to make it happen, and the stars in the film ensured that it would hit theaters. In the film, the biggest issues is the fact this doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Not that I really expected any of that to unfold, I did think the script was lacking in bringing any meaning to the table.
Below, you can hear my full thoughts on the film and whether or not you should check it out.
