There will be a few times this season when we get a double-header to end the week on Monday Night Football. This week is the first of those is this week as we get two winless teams and one undefeated team doing battle over two games Monday night. I’ll have a full preview of the games below, but first let’s look at what we learned from Sunday’s games.
The Bears’ running game is a rumor
The Bears haven’t found much success on the ground the first two weeks of the season, but a Week 3 battle with the woeful rush defense of the Colts figured to be the tonic the team would need. It didn’t happen. D’Andre Swift managed just 20 yards on 13 carries, while the team had just 63 yards on 28 carries. That is putting even more pressure on Caleb Williams, who had to throw it 52 times on Sunday. The Bears need more out of the ground game.
Anthony Richardson and Will Levis are struggling
The pair of second-year quarterbacks came in with some lofty expectations. Instead, the two are a combined 1-5 on the season. Richardson got the win on Sunday, but he failed to throw a touchdown while tossing two more interceptions. So far, he has three passing touchdowns and six interceptions, including five the past two weeks. Levis, also, has struggled with brutal and untimely turnovers. He’s also now 0-3 on the season and it’s fair to wonder if the patience is wearing thin for the first-year coach in Tennessee as he sees the season slipping away.
Andy Dalton was the spark the Panthers needed
The Panthers elected to bench Bryce Young after two dreadful games. The veteran Dalton came in and the Panthers looked like a different team. The Red Rifle proved he still has a few rounds in the chamber, throwing for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns, becoming the first QB in the NFL this season to do so, as the Panthers scored 36 points and earned a big road victory. Dalton showed he’s a great waiver wire grab for those in need of QB help.
And now, on to the Monday night games.
Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2) at Buffalo Bills (2-0)
The Jaguars have started winless while Trevor Lawrence has struggled. The Bills, meanwhile, came-from-behind in Week 1 and smashed the Dolphins in Week 2. This is a tale of two teams moving in opposite directions that are both looking to get the win.
For the Jaguars, Lawrence is a low-end QB2 for me. In the backfield, I like Travis Etienne as an RB2. Evan Engram is out again, giving Brenton Strange some appeal if you’re desperate at tight end. Among receivers, they’re all WR3 or WR4 range. Of the three, I like the rookie Brian Thomas the best.
For the Bills, Josh Allen is a QB1 that should be in your lineup. I also like James Cook in the backfield. He’s a low-end RB1 for me. In the passing game, Dalton Kincaid hasn’t been as good as hoped, he’s more of a TE2. Among the receivers, I like Khalil Shakir. He’s a WR3 for me.
I’m taking the Bills in this one.
Washington Commanders (1-1) at Cincinnati Bengals (0-2)
The Bengals have had a rough start to the season, losing to the Patriots in Week 1 and losing at the gun to the Chiefs in Week 2. The Commanders, meanwhile, outlasted the Giants last week after being soundly beaten by the Buccaneers in Week 1. Both teams would like to get a win here.
For the Commanders, Jayden Daniels is a QB2 for me. His passing has been decent, and he has rushing upside. Hopefully he finds the end zone. I like Brian Robinson, Jr., as an RB2, while Austin Ekeler is a flex option. In the passing game, there hasn’t been a lot to rely on. I’m still starting Terry McLaurin, but I have him in the low-end WR3 range now.
For the Bengals, Tee Higgins is due to make his debut. That’s good news. I like Joe Burrow as a QB1, and I like Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins both as starts in this one. Zack Moss hasn’t been great, but he’s got flex appeal to me. I also like Mike Gesicki as a low-end desperation TE option. With Higgins back he likely won’t see as many targets, but he should provide some scoring.
I’m taking the Bengals in this one.
