After a week with no new show releases, I’m back taking a look at the latest new series to drop to end the month of June. Which of these new shows is worth your time to check out? Let this weekly post be your guide as I review the pilot and second episode of new series this summer. Don’t see a new show listed below? Check previous weeks.
Wednesdays:
Land of Women, Streaming Wednesdays on Apple TV+ (Premiered June 26)
About: The latest on Apple TV+ is a dramedy starring Eva Longoria. The series focuses on a woman, Gala (Longoria), who seems to be living her best life. She’s married, wealthy, and opening her new wine bar. But when she discovers her husband (James Purefoy) has been hiding money troubles and compounded that by taking a lone he can’t pay back from some shady characters, Gala’s world is turned upside down. Facing the possibility of physical danger and unable to repay her husband’s loans, Gala grabs her college-age daughter Kate (Victoria Bauza) and her aging mother Julia (Carmen Maura) and heads to her mother’s hometown in Spain. She expects to connect to her mother’s roots in her childhood home, but things don’t go as planned. That leaves Gala scrambling for answers and trying to keep her family safe—and in the dark about what’s really happening. Longoria is good in this role and the rest of the cast—including a fun turn from Santiago Cabrera—is good. I enjoyed the first two episodes, which featured a good blend of comedy and drama setting the world and the plot into motion. Each is around 45 minutes. The first two episodes are now available to stream, with subsequent episodes of the six-episode season dropping weekly. I thought this was a fun series and worth checking out.

Supacell, Now Streaming on Netflix (Premiered June 27)
About: Netflix’s new series is an import from the U.K. about a group of people who develop superpowers. I know, we’ve seen this before. Even before the craze of superhero content from Marvel and D.C., we got stories about real life people dealing with powers and acclimating to the new world order. This feels very much like a modern-day Heroes, just set in England and following a new group of characters. We’re introduced to several people just coming into powers and their confusion over the new world order. One of those people—Michael (Tosin Cole)—is pulled into the future by his powers where he learns the Earth is about to change. He sees other people with powers and is tasked with finding them and forming a team to change their future fate. There’s a lot going on here, with episodes running 45-50 minutes. It’s a six-episode season, all now available to stream. We’ve seen this plot set up before—many times. What helps them stand out are the depth of character and story. Through two episodes that’s OK here but wasn’t as compelling as I’d hoped.

My Lady Jane, Now Streaming on Prime Video (Premiered June 27)
About: Hailing from Gemma Burgess, the latest from Prime Video is a historical drama with a twist. It focuses on Lady Jane Grey, who was briefly Queen of England before being convicted of Treason. But this isn’t a dusty, dry, historical tale. No, this Jane (Emily Bader) is a feisty lady that manages her own affairs. That includes bristling at her arranged marriage, and enjoying a great friendship with her cousin, King Edward (Jordan Peters). The world is also different from our own as some people have gained powers, specifically the ability to shape-shift into different creatures. That has led to a rift between them and the normal that threatens to tear the Kingdom apart. Can Jane manager her affairs, assist her cousin, and help foil the succession plots raging all around her? That’s the focus of this series, based on the book from Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows. I love the tone and production here. Bader is a lot of fun in the lead, the blend of a soapy and comedic tone really works. The season is eight episodes, all now available to stream. The first two move at a good pace, setting up the plot and the world and bringing you into it all. This is a fun addition for Prime Video.

WondLa, Now Steaming on Apple TV+ (Premiered June 28)
About: This new series is aimed at younger viewers. WondLa is an animated series for families based on the books from Tony DeTerlizzi. The season is seven episodes, each around 25 minutes and all now available to stream. The series introduces us to Eva (Jeanie Mason), who is born into a protected base and raised by a robot named Muthr (Teri Hatcher) to be prepared for her missions on Earth. When she is forced from her shelter, she finds Earth has changed and has to put years of training into practice to explore and survive. The pilot is a lot of set up for the characters and the world, but we dive more into the journey in episode two. I enjoyed the animated style and the pacing. The voice cast, which also includes Brad Garrett and Alan Tudyk, among others, is also strong. This will be a fun journey for younger viewers that also offers some solid storytelling that will work for older audiences.
