“They’re not gonna want to punch you in the face if you’re making them laugh.” -Gina Yashere

Honestly, props to Tribeca for programming a documentary about LGBT comedians. It was laugh-out-loud funny and tackled some of the pressing issues affecting the LGBT community today.

Outstanding covers the history too. Like: what about comics that the younger generation probably hasn’t heard of like Robin Tyler or Rae Bourbon? And where was everyone during the AIDS pandemic?

“Why do we want to repress each other?”

Solomon Georgio made a really good point about the “absurdity of the culture we live in.” Several comics talked about a time when it was really dangerous to come out and how Ellen Degeneres’ coming out could have meant career suicide. Other newer comics realize that their time is now and that they are standing on the shoulders of those who have come before. Outstanding puts everything in perspective and provided the audience with a really good time.

Rating: 8/10

Outstanding plays at Tribeca once more (Monday, June 10 @ 8:15 PM). It will be soon be on the Netflix platform on June 18th.
