We’re coming to the end of the year, meaning it is time to look back on the year that was. This week Today, I’m switching it up and looking at my five least favorite films of 2023. If you want to see something positive, Eric and I shared our Top 12 movies of the year on the This Week at the Movies podcast. Be sure to catch up with the video of our show!

No. 5: Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey
About
: This was a film many talked about, wondering what it would be like. Since the trademark on Winnie the Pooh lapsed back into the public domain, it opened up new possibilities. That novelty is really all this horror movie has going for it. It’s dull and entirely creepy to see our friends from the 100 Acre Woods turn to eating people.

No. 4: The Black Demon
About:
Look, I love a good shark movie. Even a bad shark movie can be good if it’s fun. Unfortunately, this shark film is neither. Josh Lucas has the lead and initially the premise seems interesting, but it quickly goes off the rails. The story drags and the effects are mediocre at best. I wanted better.

No. 3: Dicks the Musical
About:
I don’t mind over-the-top if it’s in service of something interesting. This was over-the-top in all the worst ways. It’s a weird premise, a weird story, and even weirder execution. It passed satire into something uncomfortable for me.

No. 2: The Drop
About:
This film came early in 2023 but it stuck with me for all the wrong reasons. It, too, is meant to be satire. The protagonist drops a baby, and it haunts their vacation trip. There’s potential in that premise but the execution here is a straight up mess. It was a slog to finish and remains one of the biggest disappointments of the year for me.

No. 1: House Party
About
: Another film that dropped early in the year but stayed on this list for months. This re-make had originally had a late 2022 release but moved straight to Max in early 2023. The streamer probably tried to bury it and with good reason. This was poorly executed to say the least.
