We’ve made it to the end of the fourth week of the NFL Season. There have been plenty of interesting developments and surprises. Now we’re about to close with an intriguing matchup between the New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks on Monday night. I’ll have a full preview of the game below, but first let’s consider three takeaways from the Sunday slate.
The Bears and Panthers are struggling
There were only four winless teams in the NFL entering Week 4. Those teams played each other with the Bears and the Panthers coming up on the short end of the stick. Both teams have some questions moving forward. The Panthers had the No. 1 overall pick using it on quarterback Bryce Young. To this point, Young appears to be behind both Anthony Richardson and C.J. Stroud, the quarterbacks taken after him. And the Panthers are struggling to put the offense together. For the Bears, it’s been a long stretch of losing that dates back to October 24, 2022. Justin Fields played better on Sunday, but the team blew a 21-point lead in the second half. Coach Matt Eberfleus is on the hot seat and the Bears don’t have much time to rally before playing Thursday night.
The Buffalo Bills made a statement
In what was meant to be the game of the week, the 3-0 Miami Dolphins traveled to battle the Bills. But it was the Bills who looked unstoppable, scoring 48 points to win by four touchdowns. The Bills lost a tough opening Monday game in New York thanks to a slew of turnovers, but in the three weeks since they’ve won convincingly. Blowing out the Raiders and Commanders wasn’t a shock but seeing them blast the Dolphins put the rest of the AFC on notice. The Bills are aiming to be a serious contender in 2023 and they mean business.
The young Texans are making a statement
The Houston Texans had the No. 2 overall pick and were expected to be in something of a re-build. After losing the first two games of the season, albeit close, the Texans have responded. First the team battered the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3 and then they posted a 24-point win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Stroud looks like a potential Rookie of the Year candidate and DeMeco Ryans is having a positive impact on this team and its defense. The Texans are not only tied atop the AFC South Standings (all four teams are now 2-2), but they’ve also been a lot of fun to watch.
And now, on to the Monday night game.
Seattle Seahawks (2-1) at New York Giants (1-2)
The Seahawks started the season with a loss to the Rams but since then, the team has played well, moving to 2-1. The Giants, meanwhile, have had a dreadful season. They’ve played two good quarters in three games, allowing them to overcome a big deficit to beat the Cardinals for their only win. But the Giants’ losses are to the Cowboys and 49ers, two teams that have dominated the first four weeks of the season. Both these teams were in the playoffs in 2022 and both have playoff potential in the NFC in 2023.
For the Seahawks, Geno Smith is a QB2. He’s not a terrible option but he’s not on the pace we he was last season. I do like Kenneth Walker in the backfield, who is dominating the carries and contributing in the passing game. He’s an RB1 for me. In the passing game, I still like D.K. Metcalf as a solid WR2. Tyler Lockett has been up-and-down but he’s a WR3/Flex option. Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a great dynasty asset, but I’m not trusting him in my lineup at this point.
For the Giants, Saquon Barkley is doubtful and likely not playing. That deals the offense a blow. Daniel Jones is in the QB2 range, but he’s not been as rock-solid as he was a year ago. In the passing game, I still like Darren Waller as the most explosive option for the team. He’s got TE1 potential if they can get it going. Among the receivers, it’s hard to trust any of them but I like Parris Campbell the best as a deep league flex.
I am picking the Giants tonight.
