It’s easy, living in the United States, to take for granted the rights we have. We have strikes and political fights, but we have the freedom to protest and to fight to make the country and the world we want to have. In other places, that right isn’t guaranteed; in fact, it comes at a cost.
The documentary Bobi Wine: The People’s President shines a light on the fight for freedom and democracy in Uganda. It follows Wine, a popular singer and activist as he tries to become President of Uganda. The film tracks his fight for the people of his home country over a seven year period.
We begin in 2014, following Wine the star as he creates music that speaks to the oppression and desire of the people of his country. Soon, he runs for a role in government, gaining a seat and all the pressure and danger that comes with it. But he pushes forward, through threats of violence, arrests and even a pandemic to run in the 2021 Presidential election.
If you follow the news, you know how it turns out for Wine. Even if you don’t, it’s not hard to guess how a fight for freedom in a place of tyranny is going to end. But that’s not the ending. The film leaves in a hopeful place as, despite setbacks, the passion and fight for freedom continues.
It’s a rousing look at one man’s sacrifice to make a change, and how it rallies the people around him. It’s also a fascinating look at the fight for freedom and the conditions in another country. It gives a window into life in Uganda, and why this fight for freedom is so necessary.
This documentary, which is now in limited release, comes from National Geographic Films. Over the past few years, the Nat Geo documentaries have presented some engaging and powerful stories. That’s the case here. You can’t help but root for Wine in his mission.
For those looking for an inspiring story of activism in the face of oppression, this is a great film to check out. It’s now in limited release but it’s worth seeking out to learn more about Wine and how he’s fighting for freedom in Uganda.
