“I’m a proud woman and it’s been a difficult year.”—Isabel
We have spent so much time looking at all the potential suspects, have we failed to consider Edgar (Zach Woods) himself. We’ve seen glimpses that he isn’t all that noble. He was cold to Feng (Ken Jeong). He seemed to be blackmailing Vivian (Vivian Wu). He had an adversarial and controlling relationship with his best friend Sebastian (Jack Whitehall) and seemingly abandoned his sister Hannah (Anna Konkle).
But it’s this final episode before the finale when we see perhaps his darkest side. Isabel (Elizabeth Perkins) is under the microscope this week, especially after admitting she knew who killed her son. She begins a tale of a woman in grief being driven mad by someone close to her. Naturally, her story is told in the style of Gaslight.
The culprit of this gaslighting? Edgar, who seems to be trying to gain control over her finances. But why? That’s a question that’s never made completely clear in the episode but might play a factor in why he was really killed. It might also possibly answer who.
Isabel spins a tale that seems wild and unbelievable. He was swapping out his mother’s sleeping pills for Adderall, playing music to drive her crazy and making it seem as if she was losing her mind. Isabel offers proof, finding the original napkins that she ordered for the Rehearsal Dinner—Edgar and Grace (Poppy Liu)—not the Edgar and Gail napkins that appeared. It’s a compelling case.
That leads her to the conclusion Edgar was trying to poison her with wedding cake. But she pulled a switch, leading her to believe she killed her son, or rather turned the tables on his plan to kill her.
It seems the case is solved, at least until Aniq (Sam Richardson) suggests the timeline doesn’t match up. The cake came too early. It couldn’t be the poison. Leading Isabel to tell the Sheriff (Martin Mull) upon his arrival that, indeed, the Grace did it…. I guess we’ll learn for sure in next week’s finale.
There is also something from Feng’s story that still bothers me. He grabs a glass after offering Edgar baobing. But it looked like he grabbed the wrong glass. What if, after all this time, Edgar wasn’t the target.
Suspect Board
It’s time for final guesses. I have to say I’ve swung all over the place this season. If the first season’s Yasper twist proves anything, it’s that the killer can be someone you least suspect. Below is my final ranking. Let’s see how close we get.
No. 1: Sebastian. I’m coming back to Sebastian. Something about him still doesn’t add up.
No. 2: Grace and Anna. Their bigger secret has yet to come out. They certainly had motive.
No. 3: Vivian. Again, she has strong motive and seems outwardly unlikely.
No. 4: Isabel. Her story may be true, but could she have accidentally delivered the poison.
No. 5: Ulysses. This makes more sense if Edgar isn’t the true target.
No. 6: Feng. I don’t buy him doing it, but I could be wrong.
No. 7: Travis. This would be the ultimate bait-and-switch. But it would have to be a heck of a story.
