“After hearing my story, you be the judge. It’s an epic tale.”—Ulysses
I’ve mentioned for weeks that something about Ulysses (John Cho) bothered me. His brother Feng (Ken Jeong) didn’t seem pleased to see him. There’s been more swirling under the surface. That’s what made him an interesting potential suspect. Well, this week we dive deep into his story and his secrets.
First, Aniq (Sam Richardson) learned the lesson that Danner (Tiffany Haddish) wanted him to hear. So, he tells Zoe (Zoe Chao) that they need to interview her family. She objects, and quickly moves to let Vivian (Vivian Wu) and Feng know they don’t have to participate. They both quickly respond they have no intention of cooperating, which gives Zoe pause.
Later, she realizes the key to the whole mystery might be getting the recordings made by her father’s videographer. She brings that to Aniq and Danner, who agree the tapes will help. But since they’d just heard Ulysses’ tale, they also knew it might not be great for Zoe’s family.
Ulysses’ tale is epic, told in the form of a sweeping, epically tragic romance. Turns out, after suffering a loss and PTSD while on the USO Tour at the front, Ulysses was lost. That is until Feng convinced him to take up ballroom dancing with Vivian. What started as a passion on the floor turned into just straight passion—a revelation that didn’t sit well with Aniq.
Ulysses and Vivian halted their affair, and he remained part of their lives for a while until the pain was too great. Unfortunately, as he was preparing to leave, Feng learned their secret, fracturing the relationship between brothers and setting Ulysses off on a globe-trotting life.
That is until Edgar (Zach Woods) found him. Edgar properly deduced the affair and added a new wrinkle—might Ulysses be Grace’s (Poppy Liu) father? That was enough to convince him to attend and see answers. While Vivian denied Ulysses was the father, he maintained his doubts. He also made it clear that both Feng and Vivian had an undeniable motive for killing Edgar. Did they do it? We’ll learn more about Feng next week.
Suspect Board
We got some big plot twists this week.
No. 1: Vivian. She’s quiet and cold, but she had a lot to lose if the truth got out.
No. 2: Feng. Clearly, he also had a lot to lose.
No. 3: Isabel. Look, this isn’t a good list for parents.
No. 4: Hannah and Grace. These two still have something going on.
No. 5: Sebastian. I’m not letting that charmer off the hook just yet.
No. 6: Ulysses. His story checks out, so he’s way down the list.
No. 7: Travis. I might be wrong here, but he seems like too big a goof to be guilty.
