“And then we were burning the candle at both ends, if you know what I mean.”—Danner
When we last left off, we learned a lot from Sebastian (Jack Whitehall). But can we clear him as a suspect? That question created a bit of a rift from Aniq (Sam Richardson) and Danner (Tiffany Haddish) at the end of last week’s episode. Danner wants to continue vetting suspects, while Aniq is focused on shifting blame to anyone not related to Zoe (Zoe Chao).
To help illustrate her point, Danner shares with Aniq the sultry tale of how she left the police department. It includes a therapist (Michael Ealy), with whom Danner got a bit too close. Much of the flashback stories, which are told in the style of a 1990s thriller like Basic Instinct, follows the investigation and torrid affair for Danner.
It’s a wild story as she chases a serial arsonist. The problem is, she let her personal connection to the case get in the way of objective investigation. It ended up costing her and leading to her resignation. She’s now urging Aniq to avoid the same pitfalls and just follow the evidence. Will it pay off? Next week it looks like the investigation focus turns toward Zoe’s family.
Meanwhile, as Aniq and Danner were caught up looking at her past, Zoe kept pushing forward in her investigation. That led her to Edgar’s (Zach Woods) room, where she found a pot of tea. Before she could check it out, Isabel (Elizabeth Perkins) and Sebastian are talking outside, and Isabel makes her way into the room. Zoe stashed the potential evidence, but what can we learn? And why are Isabel and Sebastian so close?
Zoe also found time to catch up with Uncle Ulysses (John Cho), pressing him about whether or not he’s a spy. Ulysses sort of dodges the question but needless to say I’m excited to learn more as his story comes under focus in the next episode.
Finally, we saw Travis (Paul Walter Hauser), in an effort to learn more about the poison used on Edgar, makes some himself. It leads to some interesting side effects but also poses the question, why? Travis is lingering on the edges but is just suspicious enough to keep on the list.
Suspect Board
It wasn’t an investigation-heavy episode, so the board looks similar.
No. 1: Ulysses. He’s hiding something. What is it?
No 2: Vivian. We still don’t know what she’s hiding, either.
No. 3: Isabel. Mother has something going on and is a bit too quick to pass off blame.
No. 4: Hannah and Grace. We still don’t know what more they’re hiding, but both have motive and opportunity.
No. 5: Sebastian. He’s still a person of interest but I’m less bullish he’s a killer. He might just be an opportunist.
No. 6: Feng. We continue to not know much about Zoe’s dad. Could he be hiding a deadly secret?
No. 7: Travis. Why drink that tea, man?
