This week we get the long-awaited sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. We have seen a lot of Spider-Man since 2002. But before Tom Holland dropped into the suit and swung into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we got several other franchises. So, today, in honor of this new release, I’m offering my ranking of Spider-Man films that aren’t directly connected to the MCU.
No. 1: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
About: This film was a revelation. It was the third franchise starter from Sony, but the first animated feature. It won Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, and it was well-deserved. It’s got a great soundtrack, a fun story and a lot of heart. It’s one of my favorite superhero films.
No. 2: Spider-Man 2 (2004)
About: It’s a close call for me when it comes to the first couple films from Tobey Maguire. I give a slight edge to this second installment, which featured Alfred Molina as Doc Ock. I like the story and some of the beats. The action is bigger, and the film is a lot of fun. I remember how pumped I was when I saw it in theaters.
No. 3: Spider-Man (2002)
About: Closely behind that is the first film featuring Maguire in the suit. Sam Raimi brings a unique style to the storytelling and certainly Willem Dafoe is great at the Green Goblin. This is a great blend of camp, humor and action. It’s a really solid film that holds up even 20 years later.
No. 4: Spider-Man 3 (2007)
About: The final film in Raimi’s original trilogy, this doesn’t live up to the first two. It’s overstuffed and doesn’t work on all levels. It’s OK but not great. Originally it was meant to be two films, and that might have made it better. It’s not a bad film, per se, just not a great one, either.
No. 5: The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
About: This is the re-boot franchise with Andrew Garfield in the lead role. Garfield isn’t bad in the role. I actually liked him in the last MCU Spider-Man film. But this franchise didn’t work for me. This film is the better of the two, but I don’t like either of them much.
No. 6: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
About: The sequel to this franchise, and probably exhibit A when we wonder why it didn’t get a third film. It is actually one of my least favorite superhero movies.
