This month starts off the summer movie season! Check out all the movies that will be releasing in theaters!
May 5th:
Guardians of the Galaxy is the final installment in the Guardians trilogy and writer-director James Gunn’s last Marvel project. The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Will Poulter, Elizabeth Debicki, Sylvester Stallone, Sean Gunn, Maria Bakalova, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper. It is distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.
Love Again is a romantic comedy led by Sam Heughan and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The supporting cast includes Celine Dion, Steve Oram, Sofia Barclay, Lydia West, Omid Djalili, Celia Imrie, and Russell Tovey. It is written and directed by James C. Strouse and is distributed by Sony Pictures.
What’s Love Got to Do with It is directed by Shekhar Kapur and written by Jemima Khan. It stars Lily James, Shazad Latiff, Mim Shaikh, Iman Boujelouah, Jeff Mirza, Shabana Azmi, and Emma Thompson. The film will be in limited release this week. It is distributed by Shout! Factory.
May 12th:
Book Club: The Next Chapter is the sequel to 2018’s Book Club starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, Giancarlo Gianni, Andy Garcia, and Jon Johnson. It is written and directed by Bill Holderman and also written by Erin Simms. This film is a Focus Features release.
Hypnotic is Ben Affleck’s most recent lead role. The supporting cast includes William Fichtner, Hala Finley, Alice Braga, J.D. Pardo, and Dayo Okeniyi. The film is written by Max Borenstein and Robert Rodriguez, and he also directs the film. Ketchup Entertainment is releasing the film wide this weekend.
Knights of the Zodiac is a Sony Pictures release. It stars Mackenyu, Famke Janssen, Madison Iseman, Diego Tinoco, Mark Dacascos, Nick Stahl, and Sean Bean. The film is written by Josh Campbell, Kiel Murray, and Matt Stuecken and directed by Tinasz Baginski.
Blackberry premiered at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival this year. The movie stars Jay Baruchel, Glenn Howerton, Matt Johnson, Rich Sommer, Sungwon Cho, Michelle Giroux, Mark Critch, Martin Donovan, Saul Rubinek, and Cary Elwes. It is written and directed by star Matt Johnson and written by Matthew Miller. The film will be in limited release this weekend. By IFC Films.
May 19th:
Fast X is the tenth and penultimate film in the Fast & the Furious franchise. The movie is directed by Louis Leterrier, and written by Justin Lin, Zach Dean, and Dan Mazeau. The ensemble cast includes Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster, Daniela Melchior, Jason Momoa, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, John Cena, Jason Statham, Brie Larson, Charlize Theron, Alan Ritchson, Michael Rooker, Cardi B, Nathalie Emmanuel, Luis Da Silva Jr., Scott Eastwood, Rita Moreno, and Helen Mirren. It is distributed by Universal.
Master Gardener is writer-director Paul Schrader’s most recent film. Its stars Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver, Quintessa Swindell, Eduardo Losan, Rick Cosnett, and Esai Morales. It will be in limited release this weekend, and it is distributed by Magnolia Pictures.
May 26th:
The Little Mermaid is the most recent Disney live-action adaptation. It stars Halle Bailey, Javier Bardem, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Jonah Hauer-King, Noma Dumezweni, and Melissa McCarthy. It is directed by Rob Marshall and written by David Magee. It is a Walt Disney Pictures release.
About My Father is a Lionsgate film. It stars Robert De Niro, Sebastian Maniscalco, Leslie Bibb, Kim Cattrall, Anders Holm, Brett Dier, and David Rasche. The film is directed by Laura Terruso. Star Sebastian Maniscalco and Austen Earl wrote the film.
The Machine is a fictional story that takes place 23 years after the real story of comedian Bert Kreischer getting involved in the Russian Mob. The film stars Bert Kreischer, Mark Hamill, Jimmy Tatro, Iva Babić, Robert Maaser, Stephanie Kurtzuba and Jessica Gabor. It is written by Kevin Biegel and Scotty Landes, and directed by Peter Atencio. This is a Sony Pictures release.
You Hurt My Feelings is an A24 film starring Julia Louis Dreyfus, Tobias Menzies, Arian Moayed, Michael Watkins, Owen Teague, and Jeanie Berlin. It is written and directed by Nicole Holofcener, who was nominated for an Oscar for Can You Ever Forgive Me? And co-writer of The Last Duel. The movie will be released wide.
Other Releases:
Ponyo will be rereleased back in theaters on May 7th as a Fathom Event. The English version includes performances by Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Liam Neeson, Noah Cyrus, Tinya Fey, Frankie Jonas, Cloris Leachman, Lily Tomlin, and Betty White. Hayao Miyazaki is the director and writer. The film was originally released by Walt Disney.
The Mother will release on May 12th on Netflix. It stars Jennifer Lopez, Omari Hardwick, Lucy Paez, Gae García Bernal, Joseph Fiennes and Paul Raci. It is directed by Niki Caro and is written by Misha Green, Andrea Berfloff, and Peter Craig.
Grease will also be returning to theaters through Fathom Events, though it will be released on the 14th of May. This Paramount Pictures release stars John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, Barry Pearl, Michael Tucci, Kelly Ward, Dinah Manoff, and Sid Caesar. It was adapted from the musical by Bronte Woodard and Allan Car, and directed by Randal Kleiser.
White Men Can’t Jump releases on Hulu on May 19th. It is directed by Calmatic and written by Kenya Barris and Doug Hall. The stars include Sinqua Walls, Jack Harlow, Teyana Taylor, Laura Harrier, Vince Staples, Myles Bullock, and Lance Reddick.
