Another year in the books and my 2021 year in review continue with my favorite action movies of the year. I love a good action movie, or often what I like to call ‘good trash.’
What is ‘good trash,’ you might ask? Well, it’s the type of movie that you can turn your brain off and enjoy the crazy world that the director, writers, and stars present to you.
F9

You didn’t think I would have a Best Action list and not have the BEST ACTION MOVIE OF THE YEAR ON IT? Ha, this list starts all about family. Vin Diesel has taken my heart for nine films and I could watch twenty more of them. The film is FULL of fun, nostalgia and crazy over-the-top action sequences.
P.S. Please come back, Dwayne Johnson.
Jungle Cruise

Speaking of Dwayne Johnson, Jungle Cruise is easily one of the most enjoyable movies of the year. The chemistry between him and Emily Blunt is electric, filled with funny jokes that hit, crazy action that makes you go WOW and Jesse Plemons in another funny villainous role. If you haven’t caught this one yet, you are missing out.
Red Notice

Speaking of Dwayne Johnson part two, when Netflix first announced Red Notice, I was concerned it would be like several of their other action offerings that I did not love. Instead, however, the movie is a whole lot of fun. The Rock and Ryan Reynolds both play a version of themselves or past characters, but together they make a fun team. Tossing in Gal Gadot, who looked like she was having a blast, the overall film stepped it up a notch.
The movie is fun, stupid, over-the-top and has a killer twist or two. It was right up my alley.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Marvel has this thing where they have characters I’ve never heard of (I don’t read comics) and makes me fall in love with them. Shang-Shi is straight badass. I loved this movie because Simu Liu gives one of the better performances within this universe we have seen to date. When you throw in the cool fight sequences, the hilarious Awkwafina and a fun final battle, the movie is a blast.
Eternals

Speaking of Marvel continuing their trend of fantastic movies with characters I knew nothing about, Eternals is not just one of the best action movies or best movies of the year. It is one of my favorite Marvel movies ever.
From my review: Overall, this is hands down one of the best Marvel films to date. It’s full of heart, laughter and a fun ensemble. You always hear about how comic book movies can be copy and paste and sometimes the criticism is warranted, but Eternals stands out on its own in a way that feels like it’s breathing fresh air in this entire universe.
