To start Week 17, the NFL is offering a triple-header of Thursday games for Christmas. That means if you’re competing for a fantasy championship, you really have to watch the games that are being played. Below is a preview of the three Christmas games, and my picks for the week.
Dallas Cowboys (6-8-1) at Washington Commanders (4-11)
This probably looked like a great game on the schedule in August. Now, it’s two teams that are out of the running. The Cowboys made a run, but recent futility has ended it all. The Commanders, meanwhile, have been beaten up and had a lost season.
For the Cowboys, Dak Prescott is a low-end QB1. I like Javonte Williams in the backfield as an RB2, while the passing game has some great options. I like George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb as WR2s with upside. One will likely go off, maybe even both, but it’s hard to count on a Top 12 day from either of them as a certainty. After a hot start, Jake Ferguson has cooled a bit. He’s a TE2 with upside.
For the Commanders, Josh Johnson is starting. He’s a low-end QB2. In Championship Week, you probably have better options, but he should be OK. The backfield is a mess, but I like Chris Rodriguez the best. He’s a flex option. In the passing game, I like Terry McLaurin as a WR2. It’s hard to tell what to make of Deebo Samuel. He’s a flex option for me.
Detroit Lions (8-7) at Minnesota Vikings (7-8)
This is another game that looked awesome a few months ago. Now, the Vikings are out of it, with J.J. McCarthy hurt again and out. The Lions, meanwhile, are barely hanging on to playoff hopes, and can ill-afford another divisional loss.
For the Lions, Jared Goff is a QB2. In the backfield, Jahmyr Gibbs is an RB1, but David Montgomery is a big question. He’s a flex option with some upside. In the passing game, I like Amon-Ra St. Brown as a WR1. I like Jameson Williams as a WR3 with some upside.
For the Vikings, Max Brosmer will start. He’s a QB3 for me. In the backfield, Aaron Jones is the one I prefer, but he’s just an average flex option. In the passing game, Justin Jefferson has been held back by some of the passing game issues. He’s a WR2 with some volatility. Jordan Addison is a flex option and T.J. Hockenson is a TE2 with some upside.
Denver Broncos (12-3) at Kansas City Chiefs (6-9)
These teams have gone in opposite directions since their first meeting. The Broncos are tied for the best record in the NFL and have a shot at the No. 1 seed in the AFC if they win. The Chiefs are out of it and on their third quarterback.
For the Broncos, Bo Nix is a QB2 with some upside. In the backfield, I like R.J. Harvey to lead the way. He’s a solid RB2 option. In the passing game, Courtland Sutton is a WR2 and the best play. Troy Franklin is a WR3 with upside and Marvin Mims is a boom-or-bust flex option. Evan Engram is a low-end TE2 option.
For the Chiefs, with Chris Oladokun at quarterback and a lot of players on IR, it’s not looking pretty. I’m not playing a Chiefs’ quarterback or running back. Travis Kelce is a TE2 with upside and Marquise Brown is a flex option at receiver, while Xavier Worthy is a WR3.
Now, on to the Week 17 picks.
