We’re cruising through December football, and that means a lot of crucial matchups when it comes to the playoff race. That picks up again this week as we have a full slate of games, including 14 games on Sunday. Below are the five games on the Sunday slate I’m most excited to see.
Early Games:
Los Angeles Chargers (9-4) at Kansas City Chiefs (6-7)
About: The Chiefs are barely clinging to a post-season pulse. They’re below .500 now well into December. They are facing a Chargers team that’s trying to hang on to a playoff spot, and who beat them to open the season. Can the beat up Chargers get the season sweep? Or will the Chiefs get a win to keep their slim hopes alive?
Buffalo Bills (9-4) at New England Patriots (11-2)
About: The Bills have been atop the AFC East the past few years, but the Patriots hold the top spot now. They also beat the Bills in Buffalo earlier this season. If the Bills still want an AFC East title and a home playoff game, they need a win here. The Patriots, meanwhile, still have a shot at the No. 1 overall seed. A win over the Bills, earning the sweep, would wrap up the division and let them focus on bigger things. This is the game of the week.
Late Games:
Green Bay Packers (9-3-1) at Denver Broncos (11-2)
About: The Packers fought their way back to the top of the NFC North. They also have a shot at the No.1 overall seed in the NFC, but they need a strong finish and some luck. The Broncos, meanwhile, have won 10 straight and currently hold the No. 1 seed in the AFC. The Broncos have tough schedule down the stretch, beginning with this home game against the Packers. They need to keep winning to have a shot at a First Round playoff bye.
Detroit Lions (8-5) at Los Angeles Rams (10-3)
About: The Lions secured a big win in Week 14 to keep their playoff hopes alive. But, entering the week, they’re still on the outside looking in. They need wins and help. The Rams, meanwhile, are back on top in the NFC. They have the inside track to the No. 1 seed, but they need to keep winning to hold it—and to hold off the Seahawks in the NFC West. This game is massive for both teams.
Indianapolis Colts (8-5) at Seattle Seahawks (10-3)
About: The Colts are fading fast. A losing streak coupled with injuries has them on the verge of going from first in the AFC to right out of the playoffs. The Seahawks, meanwhile, are tied for the best record in the NFC. But they’re behind the Rams in the West and need to keep winning to have a shot to get the division and a home playoff game. This is a crucial matchup for two teams with playoff aspirations.
