The Chargers sprang to life in 2024 under new Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. The team won 11 games and made it to the playoffs. But in the playoffs, the Chargers fell flat. They ended up going out to the Houston Texans, ending their season. This off-season they re-loaded, but will they be better? Let’s dive in.
Off-Season Changes
Despite a successful season, the Chargers made some major changes on offense. The team let receiver Joshua Palmer go, and he landed with the Buffalo Bills. So, too, did defensive end Joey Bosa. Meanwhile the Chargers’ top two running backs from 2024 are both gone. J.K. Dobbins moved on, signing with the Denver Broncos. Meanwhile Gus Edwards remains a free agent.
But the Chargers did a fare amount of reloading. The Chargers brought back Keenan Allen to bolster the receiving group and added tight end Tyler Conklin as a new weapon. They also added Tre Harris as a receiver in the Second Round. In the ground game, the Chargers signed free agent Najee Harris. He rushed for 4,312 yards and 28 touchdowns in four seasons with the Steelers. But the Chargers weren’t content. They also drafted North Carolina back Omarion Hampton. He rushed for 3,565 yards and 36 touchdowns in his time with the Tar Heels. That gives the Chargers a great one-two punch in the backfield.
Fantasy Impact
At quarterback, the Chargers have a rock in Justin Herbert. This is a run-first team, so Herbert is more of a high-end QB2 for me with upside. In the backfield, the question is the split for Harris and Hampton. Hampton is the better long-term option, and I think he’s got more upside. He’s an RB2 for me in 2025. I think Harris will contribute, but I like him as an RB3.
In the passing game, Ladd McConkey had a great rookie year and remains the Chargers’ No. 1 option. He’s a low-end WR1 for me. I think Harris and Allen will contribute, and Quentin Johnston is still in the mix. I like Harris best for Dynasty, but I think Allen will have a better 2025. At tight end, Conklin is the one I like best for 2025, but there are a lot of people in the mix. I think he’s a TE3.
The Bottom Line
The Chargers were a bit of a surprise in 2024, but they might face an uphill battle in 2025. They won’t catch anyone by surprise and the injury to Rashawn Slater is a big blow to the offense. The defense is solid, but still a work-in-progress. They won’t be bad, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see them win nine games and fall short of the playoffs.
