The Chiefs were on a quest in 2024. They had won back-to-back Super Bowls and wanted to become the first team to win three straight. They made it to the Super Bowl, but it was the Eagles who won the title. Now, the Chiefs are back and looking to get the trophy once again. Are they good enough to answer the call? Let’s dive in.
Off-Season Changes
The Chiefs saw a few players move on. Backup quarterback Carson Wentz signed with the Vikings, while running back Samaje Perine moved back to the Cincinnati Bengals. Among receivers, Mecole Hardman left to sign with the Green Bay Packers while DeAndre Hopkins signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Justin Watson, meanwhile, moved on to the Houston Texans, while safety Justin Reid signed with the New Orleans Saints.
The Chiefs also brought in some pieces. They added former 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell for backfield depth and acquired Gardner Minshew to serve as backup quarterback. The also brought in defensive lineman Jerry Tillery and safety Mike Edwards. In the draft, the Chiefs used as First Round pick on offensive lineman Josh Simmons. The team also added rookie receiver Jalen Royals and running back Brashard Smith.
Fantasy Impact
The Chiefs are led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He hasn’t been the gunslinger he was the past few seasons, but he’s still a low-end QB1. In the backfield, it looks like Isaih Pacheco and Kareem Hunt will again lead the way. If Pacheco is back healthy, he has RB2 upside. I have him as a high-end RB3, with Hunt in the RB4 range. Mitchell was a sleeper for me, but he might not even make the team.
In the passing game, tight end Travis Kelce is still a force. He’s aging, but still a big target for Mahomes. I like him as a TE1. The receiver group is more of a question. Rashee Rice is back healthy, but he faces a suspension. It could come in the middle of the season if they don’t work out an agreement soon. If that happens, it could derail fantasy players as its rumored in the six to 10 game range. That keeps him no higher than a WR5 for me despite his upside. I like Xavier Worthy as the top option for now, finishing as a WR3. I like Hollywood Brown to finish as a WR4.
The Bottom Line
The Chiefs have won the AFC West for nearly a decade. The team should again contend for the AFC West title and the playoffs. And, until proven otherwise, they are a contender for the Super Bowl.
